Lakhan Thapa

Lakhan Thapa Magar (1835–1877) was a Nepali revolutionary known as "the first martyr of Nepal"〔In 1874 (1932 BS), Lakhan Thapa gathered people in Gorkha in, protest against the Ranas, Jung Bahadur in particular. All the protesters were arrested and most, including Lakhan Thapa, were hanged to death. Lakhan Thapa was killed for political reasons and so is considered Nepal's first martyr. (Nepali Times )〕 He has been labeled such by the Nepali Magar ethnic group as he was the one who first resisted to the government in Nepal namely: the rule of the Rana dynasty 1846 - 1950. He rebelled against the rule of Jang Bahadur Rana. He was supported by his close friend Jay Shingh Chumi Magar. Jayashingh Chumi was his minister. He propagandized his political ideology to destroy the Jung Bahadur Rana regime, to form a free state and army.〔"जंग बहादुरले नेपाल लाई म्लेछेलाई बेच्यो, दुनियालाई त्राही त्राही परिरहेको छ , जंगेलाई हटाई नेपालमातालाइ पापको बोझबाट हल्का गरेर नेपालमा सत्य युग फिराऊं भन्ने जगदम्बा कालिमाताले मलाइ वरदान दिएकिछन् | लौ भाइ हो तयार होउ " भनि उनले निक्कै मानिसहरुको दल खडा गरे |Bhim Bhaktaman Singh - Nepal - 2005 pp 68〕
==Early life==
He was born in Kahule Bhangar of Gorkha district, west Nepal in 1835. No further documentation is available on his education and career, however, some Nepalese historians write he was a social organizer and promising leader of the ethnic indigenous group of people. He was a follower of Josmani Saint sect of religion.〔"Political resistance based on ethnicity did take place in Nepal only to be consigned to local lore" Hark Gurung: Nepal: Social demography and Expressions - 1998 - pp 202〕 He has also been portrayed as peasant's leader〔However, he reiterates that his film simply tracks the history of Nepali people's movements from the 1770s, including the peasant movement which produced the “first martyr” Lakhan Thapa, the Praja Parishad and Nepali Congress movements, and finally the Maoist armed struggle and the toppling of the monarchy, ending with the proclamation of the republic in 2008. “It is not possible to make any film on Nepal's history or politics without mentioning Maoists,” he says, adding the Maoists are a legitimate movement, with the largest number of seats in the Assembly. (The Hindu )〕
